The Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) is a movement of climate leaders and companies driving industrial decarbonization across the entire value chain of the world’s highest-emitting sectors: aluminum, cement, chemicals, steel, aviation, shipping, and trucking. MPP is charting the inventive steps and radical collaboration to enable commercial-scale First Projects in this decisive decade.

The Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA)’s mission is to catalyse decarbonisation across heavy-emitting sectors, including energy, industry, and transportation, and accelerate the delivery of Paris-aligned targets. The ITA Secretariat brings global industry leaders together with policymakers, finance, and technical experts to unlock investment and rapidly scale implementation and delivery of projects needed to cut emissions, consistent with credible 2030 1.5°C pathway targets as determined by the International Energy Agency (IEA). 

The ITA Secretariat will be hosted by the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) and will actively facilitate collaboration, engagement, and implementation with partners in policy, finance, infrastructure, and technology. Founding partners include the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and the World Economic Forum (WEF). MPP will lead the Secretariat and technical work alongside key industry-specific initiatives.  

The role of Deputy Director will be responsible for setting the strategy with the Executive Director and driving implementation with our partners.

Position Overview 

The Deputy Director’s key responsibilities will be supporting the Executive Director in setting strategy and driving implementation with our partners. This is a new and incredible position leading a global program and collaborating with a wide ecosystem across business, finance, policy, and NGO’s and setting the vision into action.  This role will be broad and varied and allow the successful candidate to develop the overall strategy and ensure implementation across the cross sectoral and sector specific focus areas – moving from decarbonization planning to investment on the ground.

The Deputy Director’s responsibilities include:   

  • Work with Executive Director to set pluriannual strategy and annual priorities for approval by the Leadership Council (LC).
  • Lead overall team (secretariat and delivery partners) through strategy development and implementation of the ITA from launch through project completion.
    • Drive and organise the ITA workstreams (this includes convening participants, identifying relevant delivery partners, and driving strategic efforts) as agreed by the ITA Leadership Council. Lead and manage communications across the ITA supporting the Executive Director to establish trusted relationships with Co-Chairs, Leadership Council, and partners. 
    • Ensure appropriate organisation and information flows with partnering organisations and initiatives– including managing communications from the ITA to partners with sufficient lead time.
    • Own the budget and the program plan with defined clear accountabilities including sub-granting process. 
  • Build out a high functioning team while developing the team and motivating them to success. (This includes actions to build, lead and develop a high functioning team at MPP and beyond MPP, including individuals on deputation to the ITA).
    • Keep team focused and on track to meet targets and deliverables.
  • Accountability for and management of the deliverables by sectoral partner organisations; Implement overall systems to measure impact and keep the team moving forward.
  • Engage relevant partners, industry organisations & participants in the ITA to define priorities for ITA, develop workplans, and monitor delivery.
  • Lead engagement and relationship building with all stakeholders and partners, being proactive, setting the tone and regular cadence to keep all aligned and informed on progress, challenges, and goals. 
    • Ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the Leadership Council.
    • Engage the wider industrial, government, and financial sector as needed, ensuring views and updates are conveyed to the Leadership Council and Co-Chairs as appropriate.
    • Supervise insights development and communications. 
    • Manage production and publication of any materials developed by the workstreams.

Position Requirements

  • 10 years of demonstrated experience with strategy development and implementation. Turning organizational vision into action.
  • Proven track record of success in managing similar large global program with multiple delivery partners.
  • Proven track record of leading the secretariat function of a global & multistakeholder initiative will be a definite positive with exposure to business, finance, and policy.
  • Prior experience and good knowledge of the climate space, in particular of energy, industry and/or transport decarbonization.
  • Proven ability to interact with stakeholders of all backgrounds at very senior levels from corporate CEOs, Gov’t officials, Board Members, and funders.
  • Superb collaboration skills and conflict management to create bridges of trust and help to involve the right people at the right time to produce the most favourable outcome.
  • Impeccable organiser and planner, including managing projects, budgets, timelines, and inputs from others. 
  • Experienced team leader, prior management experience and ability to build, motivate, develop, and run a successful, impactful team.
  • Good judgment with proven ability to make decisions and move forward.
  • Very strong written and spoken communication skills, including being clear, concise, and organised to build awareness – ensuring call to action.
  • A “doer” attitude. Consummately results oriented; able to identify and execute priorities across an organization, and partners. Creative, flexible and solution oriented.
  • Active listening skills and ability to influence while building relationships.
  • Flexibility in approach and comfortable in an entrepreneurial/start-up environment.
  • Master’s degree and exceptional academics required.

Compensation

MPP compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
