Working with the financial sector on a 1.5°C future

Finance is essential to meeting both the transition and resilience needs of energy-intensive sectors. We are partnering with financial institutions to support the role of finance in decarbonising seven critical industry sectors.

Our Work

We are focused on four priority areas:

  • Pillar 1 – Financial institution engagement and outreach: Identifying and engaging with relevant financial institutions in the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors
  • Pillar 2 – Climate-aligned finance: Through our partner, RMI’s Center for Climate-Aligned Finance, we are working with financial institutions to adopt collective lending and investment policies in line with agreed net-zero sector roadmaps, with the objective of supporting their clients on their decarbonisation journey
  • Pillar 3 – Transition finance: In partnership with the World Economic Forum’s Financing the Transition to a Net-Zero Future initiative, we are:
    • Developing sector financing, de-risking blueprints and transition financing mechanisms to support near-term capital deployment of low-carbon technologies through pilots and projects for select sectors (aviation, steel, shipping, chemicals, etc.)
    • Assessing financing needs via opportunity archetypes and deal-structuring simulations in partnership with public and private financial institutions
    • Launching transition finance commitments and pilots
  • Pillar 4 – Policy: Developing specific policy recommendations related to sectoral research and finance that reinforce the role of finance in support of climate goals
